Lot Essay

This Entombment has traces of hinges on both edges of the panel suggesting it would have had wings at either side. The original placement of these hinges, indicates that the altarpiece would have folded in a concertina fashion. Mauro Minardi, to whom we are grateful for his assistance cataloging this lot, considers the painting to be of Venetian origin. Saint Ludovic, who is closely associated with the Franscican order, is included in the upper section, suggesting the polyptych may have been a Franciscan commission. An alternate attribution to a Greek artist, or Creten origin, has also been proposed, dating slightly later to the early 15th century.
