Lot Essay
Amazingly beautiful and a pinnacle of precision haute horology, Romain Gauthier’s third watch, ‘Logical One’ was introduced in 2013 and was almost immediately honoured in winning the prize for ‘Best Men’s Complication Watch’ in the same year at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.
The finish of the movement is, as expected, exceptional. It showcases Gauthier’s mastery of hand-finishing in the frosting, bevelling and graining of the plates. The present white gold model, now discontinued, features a superb ‘grand feu’ white enamel dial. However, the great and significant achievement of ‘Logical One’ is its 21st century reinterpretation of the chain and fusée constant force mechanism. Wound by an ingenious ergonomic pusher in the side of the case, this patented constant force system features a friction-minimizing quadruple flat ruby chain and a slowly rotating snail cam, which can be seen to the left of the main dial. The technical advantage is that the snail cam and mainspring barrel are on the same level and therefore the force is always transmitted in a straight line so that it provides constant timing precision over the entire 46-hour power reserve, a power reserve indicator is located on the back of the movement.
Romain Gauthier
Born in Le Sentier, Switzerland in 1975, Romain Gauthier has watchmaking and micro- engineering in his genes. Having completed his studies in precision-mechanics, in 1997, Romain Gauthier was hired by a horological parts manufacturer in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. The ingenuity of Romain Gautier lies in his passion for all things mechanical and his ability to translate abstract ideas into drawings which are then put into movement. After several years researching and working in secrecy, in 2006, Romain founded the Manufacture Romain Gauthier and presented his first watch – the Prestige HM model.
