Lot Essay

Claude Lalanne designed furniture that was beautifully unique by drawing inspiration from the organic components commonly found in the world around her, often the flora and fauna near her scenic home in Ury, France. Her furniture transforms nature into sculptural works of art that resemble the furnishings of everyday life. Her Ginkgo furniture gain depth from her whimsical approach to proportion. The oversized ginkgo leaves provide a touch of magic and draw inspiration from elements of Art Nouveau and surrealism, evoking in the viewer memories of fairy tales and dreams from their youth. The present low table is particularly large in scale, designed as a special commission, and is an excellent example of Claude's creativity and craftsmanship.
