Lot Essay

Magda Mautner von Mark grew up in a household surrounded by art and design. Her sister, Ditha, married the influential artist and designer Koloman Moser while Magda herself studied art and painting under the French artist Maurice Denis. Mautner commissioned Josef Hoffmann to furnish her apartment and studio, likely around the time she commissioned this set of flatware. A great supporter of contemporary Austrian art, she continued to fill her space with works from other renowned Austrian artists such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.
