Collection of Ebbe Helmuth Adam Berner (1894-1971), DenmarkEbbe Berner was a Danish interior architect and worked for Danish embassies for many years. As he grew up in a Danish manor, Ebbe Berner also specialized in interior decoration of Manor houses. He was very passionate and inspired by Asian art and made numerous journeys in China from 1920s until 1940s where he acquired a large collection of Chinese art and antiques. The present two porcelain pieces from Ebbe Berners were exhibited at the Museum of Danish Art and Industrial design in 1950.

Reposant sur un petit pied circulaire, la panse est ornée à l'extérieur de pétales de fleur de lotus moulés. Il est entièrement recouvert d'une glaçure bleutée brillante.
Hauteur : 6,8 cm. (2 5/8 in.) ; Diamètre : 14,8 cm. (5 7/8 in.)

Provenance

Collection of the Danish interior architect Ebbe Berner (1894-1971), acquired with T.Y. King, Shanghai in 1937 (according to the collector's inventory notebook), thence by descent to the present owner.

Lot Essay

A very similar Longquan celadon bowl is illustrated by R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 3 (II), London, 2006, p. 583, no. 1572. The barbed form appears to be based on a prototype in silver, such as the silver-gilt bowl illustrated in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua doquan; Jin yin yu shi juan (Complete Masterpieces of Chinese Cultural Relics; Gold, Silver, Jade and Stone), Hong Kong, 1994, p. 139, no. 146, which was recovered from a Song dynasty hoard at Pingqiao, Liyang, in Jiangsu province.
