Lot Essay

This sheet has three studies, all for figures seen in The Dance, Leighton's large scale 1881-3 frieze designed for 1, South Audley Street, the home of the banker and patron James Stewart Hodgson (1826-1899). The Dance was matched by another frieze, Music, on the other side of the room: both are now at Leighton House Museum. These studies are typical of Leighton's later compositional studies, with their focus on the drapery and poses rather than the individual features of the sitters.
