Lot Essay

This portfolio is a collection of one example of the work of each of ten artists working “on the Bowery” in the 1970s. Borrowing its title from a 1956 documentary film on the daily lives of the Bowery neighborhood’s rootless inhabitants, this portfolio reflects the transition of this undeveloped pocket in lower Manhattan from skid row to important artistic community. Included in the portfolio are coversheets with biographical information and studio photographs of each artist represented in the group of screenprints. The ten contributions highlight the variety of work being produced by New York City based artists around 1971.
