Remaining in original untouched condition, this highly appealing 1972 Day-Date is one of the rare examples made for the Japanese market and supplied with a ‘Made in Japan’ 18k gold President bracelet. It is also an important documentary piece due to the remarkable survival of the full set comprising the original box, Guarantee and sales tag. Additionally, the accompanying Rolex Day-Date literature and numbered Guarantee is printed in Japanese.
During the 1960s and 70s, Japan’s economy was one of the most successful in the world. This meant that high import duties were imposed on foreign products in order to protect the economy. To reduce the impact of import duties, during this period Rolex exported only the watch without a bracelet to Japan. The bracelets were manufactured in Japan and fitted to the watches before being sold.
Rolex Day-Dates with Japanese made bracelets are undoubted rarities and the present superlative example with full set is certainly one of the finest to be offered at international auction.
