Lot Essay

This unique version of Maîtres du Temps’ Chapter Three Reveal dual-time wristwatch is a hand-crafted masterpiece of the very highest caliber. It was collaboratively designed and made by the two of the greatest contemporary independent watchmakers, Kari Voutilainen and Andreas Stehler. Moreover, the dial is brilliantly hand-painted with a copy of Jasper Johns’ 1959 painting ‘Figure 8’ by the highly respected miniature artist André Martinez. This remarkable unique Chapter Three Reveal differs from the standard model in dispensing with the date and seconds dials in order that the artwork of the dial is not compromised. Instead of displaying a traditional moon phase, the small moon phase aperture slowly revesals the signature of André Martinez over its 29 ½ day rotation. A pusher set into the crown lowers and hides two hidden panels in the dial to reveal a second-time-zone indicator (the numeral ‘8’ in red), and a day/night indicator, both displayed on Maîtres du Temps’ signature rollers that are also hand-painted by André Martinez. The lowering and sliding mechanism that allows seamless motion to the two hidden panels is a true feat of watchmaking genius.

The coupling of the talents of Kari Voutilainen and Andreas Stehler was an inspired move by Maîtres du Temps, their respective specializations perfectly complementing each other. Kari Voutilainen developed Chapter Three Reveal’s complete movement architecture. The bridges and plates are decorated and finished to the extraordinary standard that is so distinctive of all Kari Voutilainen’s watches. Interestingly, the Chapter Three Reveal was the first original calibre that he had developed for another brand. Andreas Strehler was responsible for the incredibly complex integration between the movement, its complications and the case, including the design and making of the ingenious ‘reveal’ opening and closing mechanism.

This unique piece combines great 20th century art with the excellence and ingenuity of two of the greatest minds in modern watchmaking. An object of immense beauty and mechanical perfection, it is undoubtedly the ultimate timepiece for both the art collector and those who are fascinated by the finest independent watchmaking.
