Lot Essay

On 10 November 1801, horological legend Abraham Louis Breguet (1747-1823) received a patent for his ingenious tourbillon invention. Breguet designed the tourbillon to compensate for fluctuations and errors in time measurement caused by the position a watch is placed in.

Highly unusual, the present timepiece is part of a special edition of non-limited commemorative timepieces, individually numbered from 1801. The watch was produced to celebrate the issue of the tourbillon patent to A. L. Breguet on 26 June 1801.

One of the longest standing watch companies, Breguet traces its roots to him who is considered the father of modern watchmaking: Abraham-Louis Breguet. Genius Swiss watchmaker based in Paris, he is the mind behind many of the most remarkable and complex devices used in watchmaking, one above all: the tourbillon.

True to this important heritage, Breguet timepieces are an exquisite marriage of tradition and modernity. The present watch perfectly exemplifies Breguet's style and technique. It indeed features Breguet's signature complication - the tourbillon - which can be admired through the generous opening on the dial.

The coin-edge band are typical Breguet traits: subtle and elegant details which transfigure the timepiece with an undeniable vintage vibe.
