Lot Essay

Cosmograph Daytonas set with precious stones are amongst the rarest and most desirable watches crafted by Rolex. Launched in the early 2000s, the automatic reference 116589 is one of these exceptional gem-set Daytona models, the epitome of the high-luxury sports watch. The present stunning example combines a pavé diamond-set dial with sapphire hour indexes and a white gold case with baguette-cut sapphire-set bezel. Only the finest gemstones are used, cut and matched to perfection.

Unexpectedly glamorous for a practical tool watch, the 116589 is just as rugged as it is beautiful. Fitted with the self-winding automatic Caliber 4130 movement, it has a 72-hour power reserve and features the anti-magnetic blue Parachrom hairspring that provides as much as ten times more accuracy and resistance to shocks and extreme temperatures. Naturally, it is waterproof to a maximum depth of 100 meters or 330 feet.

The first Rolex chronographs featuring diamond, sapphire and ruby-set cases were launched in the 1980s. These well-known designs set with jewels served an elite clientele and aimed to offer them designs which were classic yet elegant. As much as they may appear as anachronisms, these masterpieces must be regarded as a superb symbiosis of two worlds, sport and elegance. The present watch is a striking asset to any collection and represents a high-point of the Swiss manufacturers' craftsmanship.
