Patek Philippe Ref. 992/108J-001 ‘Lac Blanc’
The owner of the OAK Collection was fortunate indeed to be chosen to acquire this gold and enamel rare handicrafts pocket watch directly from Patek Philippe in 2021.
One of the great standout pieces from Patek Philippe’s Rare Handicrafts division, this sensational unique yellow gold pocket watch is a masterwork of the enamellers craft. Showcasing several different enamelling techniques, the artist has successfully captured not only a true feeling of the alpine landscape but has also managed to convey a freehand painterly effect in impervious Grand Feu enamel, an exceptional achievement in this painstaking art form. The view depicts Mont Blanc from Lac Blanc in Switzerland, only around one hour from Patek Philippe’s headquarters in Geneva. The background of the scene is decorated with a flinqué sunray pattern for the sky, and for the lake the ground has been hand-engraved. Translucent enamels have then been applied so that the engraved backgrounds create added depth and richness, the clouds in the sky and their reflections on the surface of the water have been amazingly rendered. Mont Blanc itself is formed by the ancient technique of cloisonné, whereby gold wires are placed on the gold surface and the ‘cells’ or ‘cloisons’ in French are then filled with the appropriate coloured enamel powder. The piece is fired multiple times after each colour is applied, after which the finished piece is polished to a glass-like finish.
The superb Patek Philippe watch on which this resplendent art piece is placed is equally impressive. Made of 18k yellow gold, the winding crown is set with a blue sapphire cabochon. The dial is made of white enamel and has a small seconds dial, it provides an almost minimalist contrast to the amazing case back, the Breguet numerals are applied yellow gold which are matched by yellow gold leaf hands. The manually wound movement is Patek Philippe’s caliber 17’’’ LEP PS. In order to display the watch to its best advantage, it is accompanied by a matching yellow gold display stand.
This phenomenal unique enamelled watch presents collectors the once-only opportunity to acquire a truly remarkable Patek Philippe contemporary work of art.
