Unveiled at the millennium in 2000, Rolex Daytona reference 116520 was a monumental leap in innovation and progress for the brand. Highly resembling its predecessor model reference 16520, the timepiece was equipped with the brand’s first in-house chronograph movement Rolex Caliber 4130. The new movement was a necessary upgrade from the beloved Zenith-based caliber and featured a superior vertical clutch mechanism when compared to the earlier horizontal clutch to activate the chronograph. Additionally, caliber 4130 was much more durable, reliable, and efficient, because it decreased the number of parts by nearly 60 percent, and incredible feat of engineering. This also allowed for an easier and cost-effective service. Noticeably, the power reserve significantly increased from 54 hours to an impressive 72 hours.
To the keen eye, reference 116520 is quickly distinguishable from its predecessor as the running seconds register has been moved from 9 o’clock to 6 o’clock, creating a pleasuring, symmetrical configuration. Discontinued in 2016, the timepiece was produced for a relatively long period of 16 years, setting it in stone as a contemporary icon of Rolex.
