Lot Essay
Cosmograph Daytonas set with diamonds and gemstones are some of the rarest and most desirable watches crafted by Rolex, and the present lot is no exception. Launched in the early 2000s, the automatic reference 116589 was produced in very low quantities and featured different arrays of diamond, gems, and hardstone dials. The present Daytona exhibits 24 stunning and glamourous baguette diamonds set into the bezel along with 8 round diamonds at the hour markers. Contrasting the bright stones is the glossy black dial.
Unexpectedly glamorous for a practical tool watch, the 116589 is also just as rugged as it is beautiful. Fitted with the self-winding automatic Caliber 4130 movement, it has a 72-hour power reserve and features the anti-magnetic blue Parachrom hairspring that provides as much as ten times more accuracy and resistance to shocks and extreme temperatures. Naturally, it is waterproof to a maximum depth of 100 meters or 330 feet, and the 18k white gold case feels substantial, hefty, and durable.
The first Rolex chronographs featuring diamond, sapphire and ruby-set cases were launched in the 1980s. These well-known designs set with jewels served an elite clientele and aimed to offer them designs which were classic yet elegant. As much as they may appear as anachronisms, these masterpieces must be regarded as a superb symbiosis of two worlds, sport and elegance. The present watch is a striking asset to any collection and represents a high-point of the Swiss manufacturers' craftsmanship.
