Lot Essay

The present reference 1680 'White' Submariner is dated to 1978, one of the last years of production for this reference, and is distinguished by the all white text, such as the moniker suggests. Its sister watch, the 'Red' Submariner features the word 'Submariner' in red. The present 1680 covets a MK 3 matte black dial identifiable through the closed 6's and misaligned 'H' and 'C' in 'Chronometer and Certified'. Earlier MK 2 dials have these letters aligned along with a slightly different crown insignia. The dial and hands have aged to an attractive creamy patina which provides a pleasing contrast against the black dial.

Reference 1680
The icon of Rolex sports and dive watches, ref. 1680, was introduced in 1967 with a date indicator as well as the Cyclops magnifier. During its 12 year production life, the model encountered a multitude of variations of dials, all illustrating the incessant quest for innovations by the firm, while staying true to its heritage.
