The Rolex Datejust is one of the most recognizable watches in the world, and one of the most iconic models to the brand. Introduced at the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Datejust commemorated the 40th anniversary of the storied brand. The watch rose above its competitors because of its ability, as its name suggests, to instantaneously change the date at midnight. This differed from traditional watches as the date slowly rolled beginning at around 10:00pm and completing its cycle around 2:00am, highlighting the superior engineering of Rolex. The Datejust is one of the brand's longest produced models with over 75 years of continuous production. Over the decades, the watch has come in a plethora of dial colors, case sizes, bezel types, case metals, and bracelet styles, making it an incredible wristwatch to collect from the wide array of configurations.
The present lot, reference 16233 is a wonderful, contemporary, two-tone Datejust with a classic 36mm case on a Jubilee bracelet. The watch is elevated with a silvered green dial and applied gold Roman hour markers. A closer inspection reveals that the 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock hour markers have also been diamond-set, adding a subtle amount of panache to the watch. Unlike vintage Jubilee bracelets, the contemporary one that is fitted to the present lot has a sturdy and pleasurable weight, thanks to the steel and gold modern construction. Delivered “full set" from the original owner, the watch is unpolished and would be an excellent choice to wear on any occasion.
