The circular cup with upper border of scrolling acanthus, supported by three winged maidens holding lyres terminating in acanthus and scrolls, the circular base engraved with the insignia of the Mendelssohn Glee Club and two presentation inscriptions within ribbon-tied wreaths, the flat domed cover chased with panels and with bud form finial, marked on underside and numbered 3592

Lot Essay

The presentation inscriptions on the present lot read "To the Mendelssohn Glee club" and "From the retired members 1866-1891." Founded in New York in 1866, the Mendelssohn Glee Club is the second oldest surviving independent music group in the U.S. after the New York Philharmonic.
