Lot Essay

This gorgeous print by Paul Strand is one of only two prints known to exist. It possess characteristically lush and deep darks that are indicative of Strands toned prints. This print is signed by the artist and includes printing notations in the artist's hand '2 ILL, which refers to that Strand created 2 prints of this image during the printing session, ILL in reference to the Illustrator Special paper the artist used. The 'F8 and 35' visible under the mount, gives a glimpse into Strand's printing process, the F8 referring to the aperture opening on the enlarger lens, and an incredibly long exposure of 35 seconds.
