Lot Essay

With their shafts modeled with putti, these candelabra are similar to a pair in the Wallace Collection, see F.J.B. Watson, The Wallace Collection, London, 1956, nos. F128 and 129, pp. 1210-13, and another formerly in the collection of Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, see Sotheby's, New York, 25 April 1998, lot 245. With similar urn finials and human bodies terminating in voluted terms, these candelabra are also very close in design to a pair executed in silver by Robert-Joseph Auguste (1723-1805) now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv. No. 48.187.389A&B).
