Lot Essay

The stamp on the verso of this photograph has been identified as M2 in Steven Manford’s book, Behind the photo: the stamps of Man Ray (2009). According to Manford, this early lifetime stamp “may be the first Paris stamp in use. It certainly was in use by the mid-twenties” (p. 19).
