Lot Essay

The stamp on the verso of this photograph has been identified as M3 in Steven Manford’s book, Behind the photo: the stamps of Man Ray (2009). According to Manford, this is an early lifetime stamp used from 1922 to 1935 (p. 20).


Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) était un romancier et dramaturge américain. Il reçut le prix Nobel de littérature en 1930. Plusieurs de ses romans furent adaptés au cinéma tels Arrowsmith par John Ford et Dodsworth par William Wyler.

Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was an American novelist and playwright. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. Several of his novels were adapted into films, including Arrowsmith directed by John Ford and Dodsworth directed by William Wyler.
