Lot Essay

The stamp on the verso of this photograph has been identified as M17 in Steven Manford’s book, Behind the photo: the stamps of Man Ray (2009). According to Manford, this is an early lifetime name stamp, “the early name stamps have been found on portraits, photographs used for publications, Rayographs, flat copy work of art, contact prints and personal photos” (p. 23).
