Lot Essay

The stamps on the verso of this photograph have been identified as M29, M32 and M24 in Steven Manford’s book, Behind the photo: the stamps of Man Ray (2009). According to Manford, M29 is a posthumous copyright stamp “numerous photographs sold by Juliet and from the Trust carry an ADAGP stamp” (p. 37), M32 is a posthumous stamp and M24 is a lifetime stamp used from 1940 to 1951.
