Lot Essay

The present work depicts Santa Fe, where the artist first traveled in 1919. Sloan was immediately struck by the beauty and rich culture that he found there, prompting him to purchase a home and build a studio in 1920. Sloan deeply admired the variable Southwestern landscape, writing that he enjoyed painting it "because of the fine geometrical formations and the handsome color...Because the air is so clear you feel the reality of the things in the distance." (J. Sloan, Gist of Art, New York, 1939, p. 147)
