This highly impressive Richard Mille sports timepiece is a rare and captivating masterpiece in every sense of the word. A motorsport inspired split-seconds chronograph of extreme performance, five years in development, the RM65-01 is the most complicated automatic caliber so-far produced by Richard Mille.
Brilliant both aesthetically and technically, the realization of the RM65-01 was challenging in the extreme, the result is a split-seconds chronograph that incorporates some amazing new additional functions. A system of colour coding enables the wearer to instantly identify any particular function with its corresponding pusher or register. In addition to the hours and minutes, the dial displays the date, the seconds at 6 o’clock, 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and the 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. The indicator hand for function selection corresponds to the sector at 4 o’clock marked WDH for winding, date and hand-setting. These three operations are controlled by a highly specialised gearbox that shifts back and forth through the different functions activated by the pusher at the centre of the crown.

The base plates and bridges are made of grade 5 titanium for strength and lightness, the chronograph features a 6-column wheel delivering optimised simultaneous movement, maximal function locking, and greater adjustment durability. Equally exciting is the ‘rapid winding mechanism’ that is in addition to the automatic winding and hand-winding by the crown. This ingenious mechanism, described as “very playful” by Richard Mille, is activated by the pusher at 8 o’clock, allowing the spring barrel to be very quickly powered up if, for example, the watch had not been used for a while. This system proved to be a significant challenge for Mille’s engineers due to the high level of torque transfer. Richard Mille’s famous ‘variable geometry rotor’ also features in the RM65-01, the variable geometry rotor is a remarkable self-winding mechanism which gives the wearer the option of adapting the winding to their activity level, such as sports or leisure. By adjusting the six-positional setting of the rib, the rotor’s inertia is modified to either speed up the winding process in the case of minimal arm and hand movements, or slow it down during high activity sports, thus adapting to the owner’s individual lifestyle.
