Masters and Masterpieces

David Rockefeller described the love of beauty, quality and diversity as the primary motivations behind the collection he created over many years with his wife Peggy. With important works acquired from his family, paired alongside items purchased through input from Alfred H. Barr, Jr., the former director of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), David and Peggy expanded their collection to include works by masters from across Asia, Europe and the Americas. These works, from centuries past through the Modern era, include diverse items from an Imperial gilt-bronze figure of Amitayus dating to the Kangxi Period to examples by Calder, Corot, Delacroix, Gauguin, Gris, Hopper, O’Keeffe, de Kooning, Manet, Matisse, Monet, Rivera and Picasso.
