Virtual tour: Photography auctions at Christie’s in Paris
Skip the lines and explore some of the best prints from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, offered across two photography sales
On 9 and 10 November, some of the most iconic prints of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries come to Christie’s Paris saleroom in two exceptional photography sales.
On 9 November, Swiss filmmaker Thomas Koerfer offers more than 70 photographs from his personal collection. Koerfer began acquiring art in 1991; today, the majority of his prints focus on human bodies.
Among the sale standouts are Man Ray’s seminal photograph, Noire et Blanche (1926), Paul Outerbridge’s Reclining Nude on Dark Green (1937), and prints by some of the most important contemporary female photographers, including Diane Arbus, Cindy Sherman, Francesca Woodman and Nan Goldin.
‘I didn’t have a clear idea of what direction the collection could take,’ Koerfer has explained. ‘But being a film director means that you are very close to actors, to emotions. I think a part of these photographs reflect this closeness to people.’
The 10 November Photographies features prints by some of the medium’s most important 20th century practitioners, including Josef Sudek, Brassaï, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Irving Penn and Robert Mapplethorpe. Also offered are exceptional images of 19th century France by Edouard-Denis Baldus, Charles Nègre, Charles Marville and Gustave Le Gray.
