Rule-breakers, game-changers, tastemakers — celebrating women’s place in art history

A curated edit of stories for International Women’s Day

One of the missions of International Women’s Day (8 March) is to increase the visibility of women creatives and promote their work for commercial projects. As the IWD website states — and the index below testifies —  ‘this lack of visibility is not from a lack of content. Women, despite greater restrictions and barriers imposed on them than men, have been producing thousands of pieces of art over the centuries’.

To emphasise this point, we have pulled together this special archive of articles on women artists, collectors, patrons, gallerists, designers, museum directors, decorators, tastemakers and our own specialists, all of which have been published on Christies.com in recent years. We hope you find enjoyment and inspiration in their stories, and then go on to discover how women artists of the past can support artists of the present by visiting the International Women’s Day website.
