Lot Essay

The five states of "Susan" represent both the color seperations employed in this dye-transfer printing and the progressive use of color in creating the entire work - a process which parallels the additive nature of Close's own painting techniques. Close's use of photography throughout his career has been both a means to an end and an end in itself, making photography an intrinsic part of each Close painting. Close executed a painting of "Susan" in acrylic on canvas (See: Lyons and Storr, Chuck Close, p. 81.)
