Bay Middleton, a bay racehorse in a loose box

Bay Middleton, a bay colt, was foaled in 1833 by Sultan out of Cobweb and was owned and bred by the 5th Earl of Jersey. The best 3-year-old of 1836, and trained by James Edwards, he was known to be savage and highly strung. He was unbeaten in the six races in which he ran, including in 1836 the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby, ridden by Jem Robinson. After he developed leg trouble in 1838 he was bought by Lord George Bentinck for 4,000 guineas and sent to stud. When the stud was sold in 1845 he was purchased by George Payne. He sired several good brood mares, and two Derby winners, Andover and The Flying Dutchman, and died in 1857.
