The victorious Grey Diomed, shown here passing the Duke of Portland's Stand at the finish, was bred by Sir Charles Bunbury in 1785 from his inaugural Derby winner Diomed out of Grey Dorimant. He was bought by the Duke of Bedford in 1789. Despite racing with a weight disadvantage (carrying 8st. 7lb., nine pounds more than Grey Diomed), the Prince of Wales's Traveller was favourite to win, starting the race as 1 to 4 favourite. Grey Diomed was eventually exported to Russia and is recorded winning races there.
