Although Corot's native village Ville d'Avray provided a hook for an enormous number of Corot's landscapes this typically late example of the motif is quite different to the more topographically accurate composition of lot 202. Corot's interest is purely in evoking a mood of peaceful tranquility, rendered with the silvery light and feathered brushstrokes that are the hallmarks of this period.

The present work was based on a study from nature completed by the artist in his studio. In later years, when the piece was sold to a Dutch collector, the cow behind the figure of the peasant girl was painted over. However, during the 1920s the painting was restored to its original state, and the cow is once more visible. The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Martin Dieterle.
