Further Details
The Hope and Optimism Portfolio takes its name from a linocut by the Namibian artist John Muafangejo 'Hope and Optimism - Inspite of present difficulties'. The portfolio was launched in 1990, in the wake of the fall of the Berlin wall and the release of Nelson Mandela. Artists from around the world, some of them internationally acclaimed, others only known in their own countries, were invited, upon the recommendation of their national galleries, to contribute to the portfolio as a gesture of international unity and co-operation. Seventeen years on, in a less optimistic, more insecure international climate, the theme of the portfolio remains poignantly relevant.

Contributing artists are as follows: Alexandra Vassilikian, Dia Azzawi, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Josef Szajna, John Piper, Mehdi Qotbi, Nuche Bajracharya, Austin Hleza, Leticia Ocharán, Fumio Kitaoka, Chéri Samba, Andrej Roiter, Robert Ballagh, Kura Te Waru Rewiri, Rivka Freidman, Rima Farah, Marius Olsen, Themba Massala, Monir Islam, Andrea Cristina Las, Sergio de Moraes, Guttorm Guttormsgaard, Henri da Silva, Tibari Kantour, Will Gorlitz, Alfred Chircop, Ofelia Rodriguez, Outi Heiskanen, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Neermala Luckeenarain, Ivan Kamarek, Yuly Mintchev, Lars Ravn, L.G.
