Dobson's early experience and study was in Cornwall, Scotland and London. Enormously impressed by the 1910 and 1912 Post-Impressionist exhibitions, he turned increasingly from painting to sculpture after service in the First World War.
During the 1920s and 1930s Frank Dobson gained an outstanding reputation; the monumental dignity of his work was in the tradition of Maillol and, like him, Dobson found the female figure the most satisfactory subject for three dimensional composition. His substantial rounded sculptures are echoed in this drawing of a Seated Woman.
