Clennell preferred to paint the unpretentious side of sporting life, recording the simple pleasures of the English yeoman farmer, rather than the grand hunt. In 1812, he showed his first canvas at the Royal Academy entitled 'Foxhunters regaling after the pleasures of the chase, the day's sport being over etc.' Another work he entitled 'Sportsmen regaling' and his 'Jovial foxhunters' was engraved by Lupton.
