Lot Essay

Rosa Bonheur was established as one of the greatest animal painters of the 19th century at the 1853 Salon, where she exhibited Marché aux Chevaux de Paris. She had a large menagerie at her home in By whence she chose her subjects, such as the present lot, which appears to be the Shetland pony the artist owned in the 1860s.
