Lot Essay

In the early 1960s the students at the Royal College of art used to organise 'Sketch Clubs'; works were put on show and external artists would come and talk about them. Richard Hamilton was invited to speak at one such exhibition in 1961 and presented prizes to both R.B. Kitaj and David Hockney. Prior to this many of the students' work at the College had not always been so favourably received; however Hamilton's interest gave them a boost that many of them, including Hockney, needed.
