Lot Essay

Fascinated by the ambiguity of popular images with multiple reference points, Kumar appropriates them to create a narrative with several layers of meanings and interpretations. A Mexican image of Christ juxtaposed with a popular image of a snake from Kalighat patta painting is fused seamlessly by the artist in this work. The snake or snake-like pattern is used by Kumar in several of his paintings to inject opposing meanings, the sacred and profane, revered and repulsed.
