Lot Essay

Little is known about the artist, however he exhibited six paintings at the Royal Academy between 1896 and 1900, including The Garden of Sleep and Phyllis.

The romance and subsequent marriage of Lady Enid and Prince Geraint, one of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table, were the themes of two of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's twelve Arthurian poems, collectively entitled The Idylls of the King, published between 1856 and 1885;
'And while he waited in the castle court,
The voice of Enid, Yniol's daughter, rang
Clear thro' the open casement of the hall
Singing...
...So fared it with Geraint, who thought and said,
"Here, by God's grace, is the one voice for me".'
(A. Lord Tennyson, The Marriage of Geraint, Idylls of the King, Letchworth, 1929, pp. 77-78).
