Lot Essay

Studio Job was founded in 2000 by Job Smeets (b. 1969) and Nynke Tynagel (b. 1977), both graduates from the influential Eindhoven Design Academy. The Perished Collection revives seventeenth-century Flemish marquetry techiques to document the skeletons of extinct animal species, and comprises of a screen, table, cabinet and the present bench, each produced in an edition of six. The collection absorbs and synthesises the fine, the graphic, and the applied arts to address issues of ecological permanance and environmental historicism, yielding an expressionistic symbolism superimposed upon an absurdist, semifunctional monumentalism. Examples of works by Studio Job are retained in the collections of the Centraal Museum, Utrecht, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Guggenheim, Berlin, and the FNAC, Paris.
