Lot Essay
Jean Dunand created the present vase for the Parisian fashion designer Madeleine Vionnet. Dunand counted many of the most famous couturiers among his clients: Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jean-Philippe Worth, Madame Agnès and Jenny Sacerdote all used lacquered metal and gold jewelry and buckles by Dunand to accessorize their models' outfits.
Madeleine Vionnet, in particular, was a great admirer of Jean Dunand's work. She commissioned a portrait in lacquer and eggshell from him in 1932, and in 1929 he was invited to collaborate on the interior design of her house in Square Arnold in Paris.
