L'opera si ispira alla traversata atlantica compiuta da Italo Balbo nel 1933, con uno stormo di idrovolanti partiti dall'Idroscalo di Ostia, il volto dipinto di profilo al centro ritrae infatti il noto aviatore, più volte ritratto dall'artista. Per lungo tempo conservata privo di telaio, l'opera è sempre rimasta custodita nella stessa collezione privata. Prima del recente rinvenimento era stata ritenuta dispersa, così come catalogata in Ballo.
