Lot Essay

The overall form of this chair derives from ancient Roman 'curule' chairs revived by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. VIII. A similar example was sold Thomas Hope and the Neoclassical Vision, Christie's London, 24 April 2008, lot 52.
