The present picture dates to circa 1939, a period when the artist was most focused on wall decorations. Whistler's most notable mural commissions were those for the Marquess of Angelsey, at Plas Newydd, Angelsey, and for Lady Louis Mountbatten (later Countess Mountbatten of Burma) at Brook House, Park Lane, London. Archival photographs of the interior of Brook House show trophy panels similar to the example offered here in situ. The image opposite shows Rex Whistler in front of the picture, which hung above the fireplace in his flat at 20 Fitzroy Square, London.
