注意事項
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 15% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis. On occasion, Christie's has a direct financial interest in lots consigned for sale which may include guaranteeing a minimum price or making an advance to the consignor that is secured solely by consigned property. This is such a lot. This indicates both in cases where Christie's holds the financial interest on its own, and in cases where Christie's has financed all or a part of such interest through a third party. Such third parties generally benefit financially if a guaranteed lot is sold successfully and may incur a loss if the sale is not successful.

The present work is an especially ordered, symmetrical version of the lane entrance motif, and formed the basis for a larger work on paper Entrance to Lane with Interlacing Foliage (present whereabouts unknown, see D. Cooper, Graham Sutherland, London, 1961, pl. 68c). The perspectival clarity of the composition also recalls contemporary pictures such as Landscape with Rocks, 1945 (Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum). Bold drawings and brushmarks co-exist in Lane Entrance, as in many such small-scale Sutherlands, with the fastidious squaring up in pencil that Sutherland subsequently applied in order to transfer his idea from a sketchbook to a larger format.

We are very grateful to Martin Hammer for providing the catalogue entries for lots 67, 74 and 112.
