Patrick Heron writes about the present work,'The flatness of the ground area is v. important. You can only design when the ground is flat and resonant and excitingly empty! I thought both the one with the red flower (Heron illustrates the painting in his letter) and the one with the flat little areas of differentiated colour-scribble on an empty white ground, were excellent' (letter from Patrick Heron to Olga Davenport, hand-written on Eagle's Nest headed paper and dated 1 January 1965).
Orange Flower was purchased by Davenport's husband, Nicholas Davenport at her sell-out 1969 exhibiton. Nicholas Davenport had first choice of purchase at the exhibition where he also purchased lot 40 and another work entitled Cliffs at Deya.
