Born in Chernigov, which is in present-day Ukraine, painter and art historian Aron Rzheznikov studied briefly at the Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and was involved with various exhibition groups in Moscow and Chernigov during the early years of Communism. Rzheznikov is primarily known as an art theorist who championed French Impressionism. He argued that Soviet artists should continue to build upon the achievements of Paul Cezanne. Risking accusations of formalism in 1941, he proclaimed that painting must 'convey content not only in the subject matter' but also through 'understanding the painterly means of expression, of the harmonious unity of color, form, and all elements of the art of painting' (S.
