Migration, the subject of Another Journey Ended, is one of the central themes of Jacob Lawrence's work. This leitmotif was particularly salient in 1967 as it was the year that Lawrence completed the series, Harriet and the Promised Land. The series, commissioned by Windmill Books, Simon & Schuster, details Harriet Tubman's flight to freedom. Indeed, flight and migration are the subjects of the majority of works from 1967. Another Journey Ended continues the subject of Harriet and the Promised Land series, depicting the safe arrival of children and adults, and manifests Lawrence's characteristic employment of simplified forms, flattened space and large blocks of color to create modern, narrative compositions.
