Lot Essay

Tomo Savic-Gecan studied at the School of Applied Arts in Zagreb and the Academies of Fine Arts in Venice and Milan. In 1997 he studied at the Arnhem Ateliers in the Netherlands. The artist lives and works in Amsterdam. The basic 'material' of his work is space. He almost as a rule exhibits "nothing". By intervening in space, the artist initiates marginal, uncommon interactions between the empty sites, viewer and the non-existent object of exhibition. He often introduces into the physical exhibition space and into the orientation of the viewer's gaze a certain incompatible element, almost invisible, but which alters the normal, established spatial and perceptual relations. By abolishing the object of exhibition and impinging on the physical and symbolic dimension of the space of art, he indirectly interrogates the ways artistic institutions function. Emptiness, whiteness, and absence characterise the works of Tomo Savic-Gecan. Selected exhibitions: Let Everything Be Temporary, or When Is The Exhibition?, Apexart, New York City (2007), PORTAL II, Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel (2003), Chinese Whispers, Apexart, New York City (2000), Manifesta 3, European Biennial of Contemporary Art, Ljubljana (2000) and What, how and for whom, HDLU, Croatian Association of Artists, Zagreb (2000). The artist participated in the exhibition On Mobility in de Appel, Amsterdam (2006).
