Lot Essay

The present work depicts a female bather at the River Loddon on the Duke of Wellington's estate at Stratfieldsaye (now Stratfield Saye). Page-Roberts was permitted to paint there only because the Duke, at that time, considered that the artist had the right as he was on his grandfather's glebe lands. The iron bridge in the background was contemporary with the Colebrook Dale iron bridge.
